Geisinger officials to present on digital personalized care at HIMSS17

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 10, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the tech world increasingly collides with the health care industry, patient point-of-care is rapidly evolving from clinics and physician offices to iPads and smart phones. Four Geisinger Health System officials will share insight on enhancing the patient experience in the digital age at this year's HIMSS17 Conference and Convention, set for Feb. 19-23 and sponsored by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society.

More than 40,000 healthcare industry professionals are expected to attend the annual conference in Orlando that offers expert insights through the exchange of innovative ideas and best practices in improving health through technology.

Chanin Wendling and Dr. Jonathan Slotkin, co-directors of Geisinger in Motion (GiM), will discuss "Geisinger's Journey to Personalized Care Using CRM (customer relationship management)" on Sunday afternoon at the HIMSS17 Digital & Personal Connected Health Forum.

GiM promotes the effective use of technology to initiate greater patient and provider engagement.

"Geisinger has embarked on a mission to deliver a personalized experience in all of its patient interactions," Wendling said. "This means tailoring consumer touch points based on communication preferences, behaviors and motivations."

"Even just a few years ago, consumerism was considered a bad word in medicine," Dr. Slotkin said. "Now many realize that striving for quality alone is not sufficient."

Their presentation will demonstrate how CRM will be critical in hardwiring consumerism and patient experience efforts across the Geisinger system.

"I am particularly excited by a CRM pilot with Geisinger's Fresh Food Pharmacy," Dr. Slotkin added. "This innovative program brings medical, dietary and social care to families struggling with food insecurity and diabetes."

Wendling will also participate in a Sunday morning panel on "The Business Case for Digital and Connected Health" at the Digital & Personal Connected Health Forum.

John Kravitz, Geisinger's senior vice president and chief information officer, will present "OpenNotes - Overall Status, Approaches and Experience: One Year Later" on Wednesday.

Since 2010, Geisinger has participated in OpenNotes, a national initiative that gives patients access to the notes written by their doctors, nurses or other clinicians. In 2016, there were 620,000 OpenNotes reviews of care encounters out of two million patient visits.

"There were virtually no complaints from the patient or providers from what was shared through OpenNotes," Kravitz said. "So it's been well received by our patients and providers alike, and the program has produced improved patient medication adherence in the process."

Greg Strevig, associate vice president, Enterprise Information Management, Division of Informatics, will also participate in a panel discussion on dashboard design and population health management from both the patient and analytics standpoint on Sunday afternoon at the HIMSS17 Population Care Management Symposium.
